School Gazebo with Sedum Roof

sedum-roof-small-james-dixon-school  Take a look at this lovely Gazebo.  Constructed for James Dixon School in London, this lovely 5m Octagonal structure is to be used as an Outdoor Classroom by pupils.  Seating up to 32 KS1/2 children.

The Outdoor Classroom was constructed in just one day by our experienced build team and included heavy duty base-frame, decking, fixed benching on 7 sides and balustrade to 1m height.  The roof is fully watertight with internal boarding and the external finish is a live sedum blanket.  This will grow and change with the seasons, even flowering in spring. Sedum also shows the pupils of the school one of the many eco-freindly options for buildings in the future as a live roofing material it encourages wildlife in the form of insects, butterflies and birds.inner-roof-small  For more information on these lovely Outdoor Classrooms either ring 01600 719218 or click here for details; timber-shelters

Images of Outdoor Classroom at Osbaston Primary School

pencils-2 We would love to have your comments on this pencil finishing we have added to the gazebo at Osbaston Primary School.

Having purchased some half round pencil stakes from a local timber merchant, they have been hand painted in bright colours to brighten up the balustrade around the outdoor classroom.  This simple job can easily be done by pupils to your school and as both paint and brushes are easily available household items, you can probably get donations from the parents to reduce costs.

Once dry, the pencils are fixed to the balustrade around the edge of the classroom to brighten the exterior and make it feel more “primary” friendly.

Comments on Installation of Outdoor Classroom at Osbaston Primary

Taken from an Email from the PTA Chair Louise Uttley to Cabinco on completion of their installation.

I feel very proud for both the PTFA’s and the children’s achievements over the past six months.  We have not only managed to raise an incredible £6500 in five months but we have been able to install and start using our new classroom.  The initial idea was drawn up by our treasurer Tracey and I way back last July(2011) and when we began talking about it we said we hoped it would be there ready for use by the summer term but reality of our PTFA raising £4000 year in year out the chance of this was slim. Subject: RE: Cabinco Information for Press release

Hi Romane

Thanks for letting me know about this. I must say that Paul did a marvellous job hosting the MP last Friday. The whole visit was exactly as we wished and I feel that Cabinco should know that he insured that everything ran extremely smoothly. I must add that we have had contractors and project managers on site here for over five years and we have never had the pleasure of working with someone who cares so much about his work and insists the work force deliver at the highest level of quality.

Regards

Ian

Work Underway on Ockendon Academy

Cabinco have started work on The Ockendon Academy’s new £960,000 classroom block.  The school fought long and hard to get the project off the ground after Council attempts to claw back some of the funds they had set aside for the build.

There was an emphasis on sustainability for the new building and so Cabinco Ltd have ensured that this is designed into the entire life cycle of the Ockendon Academy Building.

Timber is the only truly natural, sustainable, and recyclable construction material and this has been chosen as the main building component.  Each classroom wall log has been precision engineered in a controlled factory environment which enabled the re-use or recycling of any waste.  During construction a strong Site Waste Management Plan reduces landfill as a result of the project and moves maximum levels of waste to recycling.

Off-site manufacture minimises the need for heavy machinery and reduces the noise, dust and duration of the construction process.  As Cabinco are members of the Considerate Constructors Scheme and aim to improve the image of construction within the wider community they are good suppliers for the Ockendon Academy who clearly desire to be considerate neighbours to the people of Thurrock.

This building design also includes for maximum natural daylight which is proven to improve performance of pupils as well as prevent eyestrain and reduce ongoing energy costs.  Use of natural daylight is further enhanced by the additional of a beautiful architect designed glazed atrium which will provide an open learning space to be enjoyed by pupils  of the school.

Acoustic attenuation will help the concentration of the teaching staff and pupils by restricting the travel of noise between classes and thereby removing many distractions.

Low energy heating and lighting systems combined with high levels of insulation make sure that the on-going energy use is low and that the Ockendon Academy can run the building effectively without worrying about the daily running costs.

The new Classroom Block has a very long lifespan (in excess of 60 – 80 years), and it is re-assuring to know that as it is predominantly timber it can be recycled in a variety of fashions (including energy pellets) and will not cause a burden for future generations to send to landfill.

Further details can be seen on the recent article in Thurrock Gazette
